These illustrations of Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales were created for Aurora Audio. To listen to unabridged Hans Christian Andersen tales, narrated by my grandmother Aurora V. Wetzel, please check out our Bandcamp page: https://auroraaudio.bandcamp.com/
The images were created by cutting paper with an Xacto knife. The black and white illustrations were created with a single sheet of cut paper. Color illustrations required some pasting.
I chose to work in this rather obscure technique for several reasons: It has an appealing graphic quality. The process of drawing-by-cutting feels like a close cousin to my other preferred medium, woodcut prints. Finally, the author, Hans Christian Andersen himself, also made paper cut-outs! Many of Andersen’s unique, creative, and sometimes bizaare, paper cut-outs are preserved in the Hans Christian Andersen museum in Odense: http://hca.museum.odense.dk/klip/billedstart.asp?language=en
